A gentle, longhorn heifer. |
We have been raising longhorns for about three and one-half years now. Our little ranch is located in Tishomingo, OK. We started with some longhorn cross cattle. We had never had cows before and really enjoyed them.
I decided to look at some registered longhorns, so I went to Dale Hunt's ranch in Lone Grove, OK. I priced cattle and thought that I could not afford cows that expensive, so I bought some heifers that were cheaper, and got what I paid for. When I sold the cows, one with a calf and the other bred, they still only sold for what I paid for them.
I visited Bob Loomis and he showed me his ranch and as I rode around with Mr. Loomis, listening to what he had to say, I guess I learned more that day than any other day since.

Long Horned, longhorn cow
Janet and I went back to the Loomis ranch and picked out a heifer bred to VJ Tommie. We went back and purchased a bull the next year. We are raising cattle that we are proud of now. We are a very small operation, but want to raise good cattle. I am partial to the Butler and WR bloodlines. I am always looking for heavy horns, not only large base, but overall heavy horn. I like horns with allot of twist and motion, I call it. I don't know if that is the correct terminology or not.

Twisty, heavy horned cow.
We are selling both of our bulls because we are going to an AI program. Ranchers have spent thousands of dollars promoting excellent bulls, so we are going to take advantage of that and improve our herd much faster.
