Where are you located?
Our ranch is located in the small town of Midway Texas. Midway is a couple of minutes from Madisonville, which is off Hwy 45 North at exit 142.

What is the name of your ranch and how did you arrive at that name?
The name, Stotts Hideaway Ranch came from my wife actually. Sandy actually grew up in the country living with her grandparents who raised cattle in Center, Texas. Looking back, she remembers the wonderful life in the country at her grand parents place, “Buck’s Hideaway” and all of the good times they enjoyed together. She reminisced about that life over the years, and we occasionally talked of someday buying our own little place and when we did, we named it after her GrandPa

How long have you been raising Texas Longhorns?
Since 7-7-7 our lucky day. July 07,2007

How did you get started?
The venture started after we bought land and just enjoyed the country life so well. Looking to save taxes actually lead us to buy our first longhorns

Tell us about yourself, (i.e. hobbies, family, and other interests)
Children first. You may run into them if you come to visit and tour the ranch. Kevin our son is a Chiropractor in Sugarland & his wife Jill is a Prosecutor in Ft Bend County. Our daughter Natalie is a schoool teacher in the Humble School District, and Lucas our grandson is bundle of joy, and a pleasure to be around. Hobbies: From Hot Rods and Harleys to Texas Longhorns It’s funny what interests and hobbies have excited us over the years. I guess we have all gone through numerous phases in our life, and my wife has endured through everything, from hot rods to Harleys, to name just a few. At this time in our life, all our spare time has turned to something we both totally enjoy—raising Texas Longhorns. Our plans began simply by acquiring a few Longhorns for their beauty and the tax benefits. But as we discovered the soothing rhythm of ranch life, our vision became more focused. What a beautiful sight it is for us now to look out over the pasture at a herd of Texas Longhorns and to enjoy time outdoors. Going to the country and mingling with the Longhorns is something we both love more than anything in the world. Trading in our hot rods and Harleys for the soothing rhythm of ranch life, replete with Texas Longhorns, has been a wonderful transition for us.

What breeder(s) or individual(s) were instrumental in getting you started?
Among the most positive aspects of our journey to the ranching life are the friendships we’ve made along the way. During our exploration period, we met and visited with many others at their ranches, large and small, and everyone was extremely helpful in showing us the way. Many thanks to all of you for your kindness, your friendship and the valuable information exchanged.

What breeder(s) do you consider the most influential in the world of longhorns and why?
Thanks especially to Texas ranchers Ron and Barb Marquess, of Marquess Arrow Ranch in Ben Wheeler and to Rex Mosser of Mosser Longhorns in Midway. We are proud to say that our foundation herd came from these ranches, and we would highly recommend their Longhorns as some of the finest to be found anywhere. But beyond their top-quality product, these people surpassed anyone’s expectations by assisting us in establishing our cattle operation. They freely provided resources, equipment and even their personal manpower working with us hands-on at the ranch. We are very grateful for their Texas-size hospitality and, although our ranch is small by comparison, we hope to live up to their standards in every way in offering the finest Texas longhorn around.

Tell us about your breeding program.
I believe a lot of us have the same goals, and that is quality as our first priority, and to raise animals that are more valuable to us and to the customer as they get older. We believe we do that regularly! We are all breeding for different purposes, but one of the main priorities among the ranchers I confer with is horn & total quality. Bulls for example, Sandy and I looked at the pedigree first, then the size of the horn, the horn base, and the conformation for age. A nice long body, deep build, nice top line, and strong legs. But we felt disposition was also an important concern. Since we were new grand parents and we have so many guests, visitors & children coming up. We wanted to raise gentle cattle that are easier to handle. Color was another important attribute. Our bulls have two different looks. One is dark and brindled and the other is more spotted, more striking in color and these two looks produce some appealing progeny

Who is your main herd sire(s)?
I am of course bias when I say that I believe Super Lee is perhaps the very best son of Super Bowl. I back that up with his pedigree. He has the best dam of all the Super Bowl sons, TY Gun Frost who last year measured over 73 ½” ttt. He is tall, hand gentle, great pedigree, and of course he has cleaned house at the Horn Showcase 3 years straight, won bronzes in all three categories each year. He is approaching the 80" ttt mark (November measured 76 3/8”) and doesn't show any signs of letting up. While Super Bowl is not a favorite for everyone, he is an outcross that has proven to be very consistent through his sons. Breeders are going to look for that size and leg to hold the ever expanding horns that breeders are creating. Years ago I do not believe Super Bowl & his sons were mated with the best dams as we they are doing today, so we are showing what he is capable of. Our other Top sire is M. Arrow Wow Sandy and I decided to add M Arrow Wow because of his pedigree, disposition and for just a whole host of reasons.” He’s big & stout with beautiful markings… He’s straight as a board on top, he’s lean, he’s long and he’s well built. Another bull with strong legs. He is sired by the great DH Red Ranger and out of Slick’s Little Star, a daughter of Starlight. He has a great pedigree, and he’s younger. Wow was over 73” ttt at last measurement and he is over 3 years old now.

What do you consider the most importand traits for longhorn bulls and cows?
We feel there are many important traits besides horns, including conformation which is right up there at the top. We also feel disposition is another key trait. The one thing about Texas longhorns is that there are so many admirable traits.

Which of your cows is your favorite and why?
Cocoa31 is one that comes to mind. I bought Cocoa31 and had her delivered on the morning of my wife’s birthday as a surprise present and she just cried like a baby. She had commented a month earlier how she just loved that cow but it was out of our budget, and I arranged to surprise her with it. Cocoa was at the time bred to ZD Kelly. Since then we have had several wonderful offspring from her. But all of them have a special place with us.

What if your philosophy on raising longhorns?
We are dedicated to improving and preserving this historic breed. All our actions portray our passion and philosophy for breeding quality Texas longhorns.

What goals and plans do you have for your herd as you look towards the future?
We continue to perpetuate the tradition of high quality and the very best of the longhorn breed. This is our passion. We have been very blessed and have a lot of great stock to breed from. We will continue to improve and try various crosses and if we add anything from outside to our base, it will have to be what we feel like has the potential to be in the upper echelon, say in our upper 25% of our herd to come in. We have reached a point that we have to be very selective when adding.

What is your favorite thing about being a Texas Longhorn breeder?
Our love for the animals and the outdoors lead us here but all the friendships we have made has truly been a blessing.

What is the most important thing you want people to remember about you?
Testimonial: What people are saying . . . “I am confident that Doug and Sandy will operate their cattle business with the same integrity that has made their family business successful during their lifetime career. The Stotts family’s devotion to quality products, excellent business standards and their steadfast commitment to customer service are legendary in the promotional advertising business. Add to that their obvious passion for their newest venture—raising Texas Longhorns—and you have a proven formula for success.” Cherie Broussard Lydick President, Momentum Promotions

Any other information you'd like to share?
We would like to invite you to come and visit personally and also take a look at our website www.StottsHideawayRanch.com Sandy and I have felt truly supported by our association with the longhorn breeders associations, TLBAA and the TLMA and its members. The camaraderie involved is like nothing we have experienced anywhere and has been a source of inspiration and motivation for us since we began the establishment of our ranch and longhorn breeding program. “The ranch was presented the Hard Charger Award for its top-flight breeder’s program at the Longhorn World Championship. It is awarded by the Longhorn Marketing Alliance, the shows sponsor, only when merited, and, according to a spokesperson, honors a relatively new breeder who has “charged” ahead, making dramatic progress in quickly establishing an outstanding program. The breeder must set high standards for quality, character, and be a positive influence for the Longhorn industry.” We were taken totally by surprise and are very proud to be recognized for the hard work and commitment that we've made in establishing our program. The learning curve and other challenges, such as the recent drought that has played havoc with establishing new pastures, has been quite challenging, but we have had tremendous support from fellow ranchers in meeting all of them. We have been truly impressed with the devotion of the members of the associations and share their passion for the longhorn breed. Would also like to share that in October 09, Stotts Hideaway Ranch’s two fine young studs brought home top awards in their divisions at the Longhorn World Championships in Guthrie, Oklahoma, and the 2009 Horn Showcase in Fort Worth, Texas. Traveling from the ranch in Midway, Texas, Super Lee, born December 5, 2005, took 3 First-Place awards in his age category for Tip-to-Tip Horn Length, Total Horn Length and Composite Horn at the Longhorn World Championships. He bolstered his championship status with three First-Place awards in the same categories at the 2009 Horn Showcase in Fort Worth the following weekend. This makes three years straight, Super Lee has won has class in all three categories at the Horn Showcase. The younger M Arrow Wow, born February 20, 2006, won Second Place and 2 Third-Place awards, respectively, at the Longhorn World Championships and two Second-Place awards and one Third-Place award at the 2009 Horn Showcase. Thanks for taking the time to hear about our operation. Warm wishes for a memorable 2010, and we hope to see ya’ll soon! Doug & Sandy Stotts www.StottsHideawayRanch.com
