Where are you located?
The Texas Panhandle. Wellington is 23 miles south of Shamrock which is on I-40 between Amarillo and Oklahoma City.

What is the name of your ranch and how did you arrive at that name?
Running Arrow Farm ~ Bill had a Siberian Husky named "Arrow" who loved to run "Straight As An Arrow".

How long have you been raising Texas Longhorns?
Bill since May of 2001 and Sandy since October of 2001.

How did you get started?
Bill was recovering from surgury and needed a breed of cattle that could take care of themselves until he could recover. He literally had to relearn how to "walk a straight line" as his hearing and balance for his right side is now totally gone. I had started dating Bill that fall. And learned that my horse skills translated over to longhorns and brought a better pecking order in relation to longhorns and people. Bill has the paperwork skills and the business end that keeps me out of trouble. I do the pedigree reseaching and work out the breeding stratagy.

Tell us about yourself, (i.e. hobbies, family, and other interests)
Bill loves to target practice, work in the yard, write and enjoy semi-retirement. Sandy is a book-o-holic and enjoys researching pedigrees, learning different breeding strategies and color predictions for longhorns and horses, trail riding with her Tennessee Walking mare, and asking a million questions to anybody who will stand still long enough.

What breeder(s) or individual(s) were instrumental in getting you started?
Sand Dollar Ranch, Lisa and Gary Baugher of BlueBird Ridge Ranch, ASOCL, Charlene Semkins, DCCI, Ken Kirkham, Owen McGill and Johnny Wilson.

What breeder(s) do you consider the most influential in the world of longhorns and why?
The Old-Timers. They understand the value of constructive linebreeding both for their herds and for the Longhorn Breed itself.

Tell us about your breeding program.
We try to balance the need for horn without giving up on the need for body and color. We have several mini-programs within our herd. Total horn with curves, lateral horn for tip to tip. Solid colors and color patterns. Balanced Body. I did build a young "Homozygous for Black" bull on purpose. Easily recognized named quality pedigrees even down the the great grandam line.

Who is your main herd sire(s)?
"BAR B Q" has arrived at RAF. 3X Show Case Champion, A.I. Herd Sire #571. 'Bar B Q' has 70" T2T 16 1/8" Base & 95 1/8" Total Horn Rumble, Red Magic 28, and Rockytop Diamond will continue to stay at RAF. But due to the bringing in of a New Senior Herd-Sire, Roundup's Blue Spock, RAF Rebel With A Cause, and RAF Phantom's Carbon will be moving on out to make room for "Bar B Q" who has 70" tip to tip 16 1/8" Base and 95 1/8" Total Horn and is considered by many to be the "Best Producing Son of Roundup".

What do you consider the most importand traits for longhorn bulls and cows?
Balance, Horn, Fertility, Disposition, Total Horn, & Color.

Which of your cows is your favorite and why?
Salida Sleek's heifers outproduce her with horn while still maintaining body. Our Ozark Mist (Ozark Mountain Queen)female line is another running neck and neck for my favorites as both dam lines pass on consistantly their nice maternal bodies.

What if your philosophy on raising longhorns?
We believe that the Texas Longhorn needs a base line job. If this JOB HAS VALUE then the "trickle up effect" to the breed as a whole adds value in addition to the other jobs the longhorn has and is capable of. This base line Job is being "Nature's Own Grass-Fed Bovine". As a possible beef animal, the longhorn is "well respected in its own field of being grass fed". We believe that adding this JOB to our own herd, helps us overall to be better able to have a respectable value to the herd as a whole and helps support our other longhorns that we use to pursue more horn.

What goals and plans do you have for your herd as you look towards the future?
Improve our herd as a whole. Improve horn and color while maintaining body. Gaining more knowledge on how to sucessfully market Longhorn Lean Grass Fed Beef.

What is your favorite thing about being a Texas Longhorn breeder?
Researching anything and everything about longhorns. Watching them do their longhorn dance and their sheer enjoyment of life. Taking pictures of them. Talking to other people about them and gaining more knowledge. I can not learn fast enough about the longhorns.

What is the most important thing you want people to remember about you?
That just maybe... all my endless questions paid off in the end... and I was willing to share my knowledge even tho the old timers have already forgotten more than I will ever know. grins

Any other information you'd like to share?
www.txlonghorncoop.org for learning how to add value to your grass-fed longhorns. to me, dollars per packaged pound instead of pennies per pound liveweight makes more sense. people do love longhorn grass fed beef once they try it. just ask my city-bred daughter-in-law... grins
